Philosophy

The complex and nuanced experiences contained in a single person’s life will never be the same as in another person’s, nor will the complexity of their genetic makeup, personality traits, or learned habits. This means that even though a given therapist may have seen 1000 clients in their life with a particular mental health challenge – i.e. “anxiety” for example - the unique way in which each one of those people experience their anxiety may be extremely different case by case.  The sources and the roots of their anxiety will likely be different.  The maintaining factors and coping mechanisms associated with that anxiety will look very different person-to-person, and thus ultimately the unique solutions to these issues will also tend to look different for each person.

Anxiety is just one example, but this basic principle can be applied for most any obstacle someone may be facing.  For this reason, it is incumbent upon the therapist to treat unique problems with unique solutions.  The view of Bangkok Therapy is that each person is living their own unique and nuanced experience, and so although yes, we will likely be able to classify your “issue” into a category (such as anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, etc.), we will not use that category to be the only guide towards solution.  We will also consider the existing life experiences, capabilities, and knowledge base of each individual client as a backdrop - to help you develop your own personalized “spring board” which can allow you to live to your potential, and allow you to move past challenges and become the author of your own future development.

We believe at Bangkok Therapy that although each ‘category’ of distress a person might be faced with in their lifetime, can and should be treated through modern methods, (such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Existential Therapy, Solutions Focused Therapy, etc.) the best therapeutic work is done when we first examine and consider the specific journey of a given client’s life, as well as the unique place they currently are in the present moment, as they are talking to us.

(For a closer look at the therapeutic methods mentioned above, please see the "Therapeutic Practices" tab above.)
